Track of the Week

Every Wednesday I will be featuring one track that I am playing constantly. It may be something old or brand new. This week it is Kamasi Washington – Street Fighter Mas

Kamasi Washington just amazes me. I’m not a jazz fan but he manages to take the genre to new levels. This particular track has got choirs, Washington’s trademark sax plus a lot of electronic burblings. This is totally epic, not to mention that it feels like something off a blaxploitation film. To a certain extent the video does reflect the music as it is presented as a film of sorts, although it is a tribute to a popular arcade game.  Anyway my point is, do not sleep on this track.  It deserves hyperbolic praise.

Track of the Week

Every Wednesday I will be featuring one track that I am playing constantly. It may be something old or brand new. This week it is Our Girl – I Really Like It.

Our Girl are a trio from Brighton and I Really Like it is a catchy tune. That guitar sound, the chorus, the simplicity. It works. This track reminds me of sunsets, the purple sky variety that gives you a good feeling. Their debut is out in August and I’m looking forward to it.

Track of the Week

Every Wednesday I will be featuring one track that I am playing constantly. It may be something old or brand new. This week it is Bodega – Jack in Titanic

There’s something brilliant about Bodega. It could be the couldn’t care attitude of the band. It could be that they remind me of The Fall at times (always a big plus in my opinion). It could even be this track’s funny lyrics. Ultimately though this is a band that has TUNES and Jack in Titanic is a TUNE of the highest order, thus it nabs track of the week.

Track of the Week

Every Wednesday I will be featuring one track that I am playing constantly. It may be something old or brand new. This week it is Angelique Kidjo – Born Under Punches.

Talking Heads fourth album Remain in Light, is a big fave of mine and Angelique Kidjo’s interpretation is brilliant. At the time Talking Heads’ David Bryne was experimenting with polyrhythms and he pulled it off.

Kidjo, who hails from Benin, clearly understands Talking Heads use of groove and rhythm and in her cover she puts it at the forefront so the end result is a dancey, hip shaking track. It’s fun but retains the original’s message.

Track of the Week

Every Wednesday I will post one track that I am playing constantly. It may be something old or brand new.

This week it is Haley Heynderickz – Oom Sha La La

This track hits all points that I like in a song. There are quirky observant lyrics and certain amount of spontaneity. I especially like the totally random shouting of  the phrase ‘I need to start a garden’ towards the end. It’s a jaunty folk song that will put a smile on your face.
